Choosing a new pet can be a bit daunting, knowing a few basic breed characteristics can be a big help, over the next few blogs we will cover some popular breeds and characteristics to help with your choices. Starting with my favourite – The Yorkshire Terrier.

The Yorkshire terrier is a small dog breed of terrier type, developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in clothing mills. Wikipedia

Ok so know that you know what Wikipedia thinks, here are some real insights, Yorkshire Terriers are active, alert, and intelligent. They are notoriously stubborn.

The temperament of yorkies has much to do with how the owners view them, either as a vigorous terrier or as a delicate toy dog made to be pampered.

They are lively, inquisitive, physically and mentally quick; they spend much of their time dashing around exploring.

They can be excitable and may enjoy the thrill of chasing birds, butterflies, bees; actually almost anything that flies is of great interest to them.

Yorkies coexist well with other pets but care should be taken around larger breeds with which they can be bossy and scrappy. They can be overwhelmed by roughhousing, teasing and general mischief of smaller children; this is especially true of the smaller yorkies.

Their keen senses mean that strangers seldom go unannounced. Early socialization is required to prevent them from becoming too shrill.

A lover of comfort, this little terrier enjoys cuddling on laps and snuggling into soft pillows.

Possessiveness is very often present and they do need to be taught to share, this means their food, their toys and very often their humans too.

Yorkies are notoriously difficult to housetrain, especially when it is cold and wet out, a covered sheltered outside are makes this easier.

They are very intuitive, they will pick up on the smallest of your behaviours and mannerisms and get to know what they mean very quickly, this makes them easy to train but also makes it easy for them to manipulate you into getting exactly what they want, you need to be aware of this, if you don’t train your yorkie, he will train you.
